What Are Sight Words?

Sight words are words that are often not phonetically correct and/or do not follow traditional spelling and phonics rules. Essentially, they are words that children can recognize by sight alone and do not need to sound out. Teachers may choose sight words from a list such as Dolch, or may simply choose words they want their students to know.

Sight Word Cards

In September, the families in my classroom are responsible for Sight purchasing a package of small index cards (or making their own, but since they’re 100 for a buck at the dollar store most families buy them). Each week, students are assigned 5-10 words which come from a variety of places, but primarily they are high frequency Dolch words and words from units we are working on in class or our reading series (Collections). My students are responsible for copying each word neatly on to a card and placing the cards in a safe place at home. Parents are asked to review the sight words at least 3 times per week during home reading time. Students are tested regularly at school to check their progress. My experience has been that parents are very happy to help their child with this process and the success rate is fantastic.

This process, in combination with our in-class sight word work, ensures great mastery over sight words by the end of the year!

In Class Sight Word Work

We use many programs & activities to enhance home sight word study. We have a basic schedule that we modify & add to as necessary.

Monday: Words are introduced & used in sentences, and we begin to look for them in packages & various contexts throughout the week.
Tuesday: Words are added to student dictionaries
Wednesday: Word Play (downloadable information package coming soon!)
Thursday: Wordo (Download the Wordo board)

In addition, we also use programs such as Making Words throughout the year. If you’re curious as to how Making Words works, here’s a sample lesson plan from Sask Ed.
